Quality & Outcomes
The options for rehabilitation care can be confusing. New England Rehabilitation Hospital is an inpatient rehabilitation hospital, which means we specialize in rehabilitation. Much different from a skilled nursing facility or a long-term acute care hospital, which may offer a variety of services, New England rehabilitation Hospital is dedicated solely to short-term rehabilitation, averaging over 2,400 successful discharges annually. This means we are able to offer a higher intensity of therapy, the most innovative and advanced technology and a specialized staff of physicians, nurses and therapists dedicated to your care.
Along with our dedication to your care, we have a commitment to quality. It is our goal to be transparent with our quality outcomes.
New England Rehab is proud to be a participating partner with the Massachusetts Hospital Association (MHA). As a partner, New England Rehab has signed the PatientCareLink Pledge.
About PatientCareLink
Massachusetts hospitals are among the best in the world. The doctors, nurses, and others who work within their walls for you and your family have only your best interests at heart.
Massachusetts hospitals have always been about high-quality care, and that care is evolving. To keep you up to date on what they're doing - and how well they're doing it - Massachusetts hospitals have come together with nursing leaders across the state to introduce PatientCareLink - a sweeping quality-and-safety initiative that demonstrates our commitment to our dedicated caregivers and the people they work for - you.
PatientCareLink ensures that you will have access to information you need to make the best health care choices for you and your family. We're proud of what we've done in the quality-and-safety field to date, but we recognize much more needs to be done. PatientCareLink is the next step forward in the never-ending effort to make Massachusetts hospitals and the care they provide the best in the world.
- A part of that effort is providing quality data to you, the healthcare consumer. Currently the PatientCareLink website provides you with info about New England Rehab's:
- Rate of Fall
- Rate of Falls with Injuries
- Facility-Acquired Pressure Ulcers
- However, PatientCareLink quality data does not necessarily provide you with the entire picture. New England Rehab tracks and monitors many additional quality initiatives internally to provide you with a safer healthcare environment with quality outcomes. Below are only a few of the quality measures reported internally.

Patient Outcomes
New England Rehabilitation is very proud of the outcomes achieved by patients who are admitted to our inpatient facilities in New England and Natick. In most of New England Rehab's programs, the functional improvement of our patients exceed both regional and national averages. As a result, New England Rehab is able to discharge more patients back to their home and community than regional and national averages.
- Definitions:
- The FIM instrument:
The FIM instrument measures patients' function in 18 different areas such as ambulation, eating, memory, etc. The FIM instrument is used by rehabilitation providers to compare the functional change achieved by patients who are admitted to New England Rehab with other regional and national providers.
- FIM Change:
A patients total FIM rating in a specific diagnostic category (such as stroke) increases from admission to discharge.
- Average Length of Stay:
The number of days the average patient in a specific diagnostic category stays in the hospital.
- Length of Stay Efficiency:
The amount of functional change per every day a patient in that specific diagnostic category is in the hospital. The higher the number the more efficient the facility is in achieving functional change for its patients.
- Discharge to Community:
The percentage of patients who are discharged from New England Rehab to a community setting (home, boarding home). Rehabilitation providers aim to discharge a high percentage of patients back to the community and fewer to skilled nursing facilities, long-term care facilities and acute care hospitals.
- Region:

- Nation:
The nation is comprised of rehabilitation hospitals and rehabilitation units throughout the United States.
